What is Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni?

Higurashi is a Japanese murder mystery dōjin soft sound novel series produced by 07th Expansion.

The history takes place during June 1983, at a fictional rural village called Hinamizawa, which has a population of approximately 2,000. The main character, Keiichi Maebara, moves to Hinamizawa and befriends his new classmates Rena Ryugu, Mion Sonozaki, Rika Furude, and Satoko Houjou. Keiichi joins their after-school club activities, which consist mostly of card and board games (and punishment games for the loser, usually him.) Hinamizawa appears to be a normal, peaceful, rural village to Keiichi. However, the tranquility abruptly ends after the annual Watanagashi Festival, a celebration to commemorate and give thanks to the local god, Oyashiro. Keiichi learns that every year for the past four years, one person has been murdered and another has gone missing on the day of the Watanagashi Festival. Keiichi himself soon becomes drawn into the strange events surrounding the Watanagashi Festival and Oyashiro. In each story arc, he or one of his friends become paranoid, and a crime is committed. Usually, the crime involves the murder of one of their own friends. While it seems impossible to tell their delusions apart from the mystery of Hinamizawa, slowly the truth is revealed. What is Umineko no Naku Koro Ni?

Umineko no Naku Koro ni is a Japanese murder mystery dōjin soft visual novel series produced by 07th Expansion.

The history takes place primarily in the year 1986, during the time frame of October 4 and October 5 on a small, secluded island named Rokkenjima 10 km around owned and lived on by Kinzo, the head of the wealthy Ushiromiya family. Kinzo is near death, and eight of his family members arrive on the island for the annual family conference, where the adults plan to discuss how Kinzo’s assets will be divided once he is dead. Also on the island are three family members who live there, five of Kinzo’s servants, and his personal physician. After the eight family members arrive, a typhoon traps them on the island, and shortly after, strange things start to happen and people start dying.

The main character of the story is Battler Ushiromiya, son of Kinzo’s second son Rudolf. Once on the island, Battler once again becomes acquainted with the legend of the golden witch Beatrice who supposedly lives in the naturally dense forest on Rokkenjima. A portrait of her lies in the entrance hall of the Ushiromiya family mansion, and a puzzling epitaph is written below the portrait. Rumor has it on the island that Beatrice gave ten tons of gold to Kinzo in the past to restart the Ushiromiya family after being crippled in the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake. It is said that whoever solves the riddle of the witch’s epitaph will receive the gold and be the next successor to the Ushiromiya family.

Once the typhoon hits, a ghastly game begins, starting with the murder of six people on the island. If the witch’s epitaph cannot be solved, people will continue to die in mysterious deaths, following the outline given by the epitaph itself, until the witch Beatrice ultimately revives. After this comes to pass, Battler is the only one left alive who does not believe in witches or magic, and as such the door to the “golden land” (as stipulated on the epitaph) cannot be opened. Beatrice takes Battler and herself to a parallel dimension, Purgatorio, which is able to oversee events on Rokkenjima. From this point on, Battler and Beatrice are locked in a game of twisted logic where Battler must attempt to explain all of the mysterious events on Rokkenjima from the standpoint that they are caused by a human, and Beatrice attempts to explain everything with witches and magic. If Beatrice can get Battler to ultimately surrender and accept witches and magic, Beatrice wins. More informations…

Sure you can. We translate these mangas because we love it and we want everyone to be able to read it, so if that’s your intention you can use it without problems. Also, remember to always buy the original work from 07th Expansion to support the author.

    Hi,
I love your work, what you`re doing is awesome. I`d like to join Bard in his request, Is there any chance to make older links on mediafire work?
    Thx

  5. Hi there,

Thanks a lot for all your hard work (and look out for yourselves, Nabiki especially)! I noticed on page 4 of Umineko Ch. 24b, “Hachijo’s Interlude” there’s an untranslated sound effect (Hachijo’s car horn) that I’m almost certain is in Chinese. I’ve been meaning to purchase the bound volumes of Umineko for a while, and since no American release is forthcoming, I turn my eyes to the Taiwanese market. But when I last inquired I was told that there was no such Taiwanese Umineko release. Could you shed some light on my confusion?

    Thanks again!

    Hi,
I like archiving my manga downloads, but it seems that your mediafire/4shared links are down. Is there any chance you will reupload? Or do you have an IRC Bot or Torrent with your releases?

    Hello!
If you still need Tsumihoroboshi English scans, then you can find them here:
    https://mega.co.nz/#F!g5MhhK5S!UumeXy0F3pBfXJPyaZOxwQ
There’s also Matsuribayashi volume 2, which contains chapters 15-18.
(These aren’t mine, I just found them)

  8. Happy Honker

Already tried .com. It did not work.

  9. Happy Honker

Hello I am trying to send you atonement arc chapter 6 but the given email asakura_nabiki@hotmail.c0m is not working. Is there any other way to send it to you?

  10. Happy Honker

    • Higurashi-fan

ok, thanks anyway!! 🙂 I’m so happy :33 Tsumihoroboshi is one of my favourites^^

  12. Higurashi-fan

Do you plan to translate Tsumihoroboshi-hen and Matsuribayashi-hen? It would be great, if i could read them in English. I don’t live in the USA, so I can’t buy the Yen Press manga.

  13. Happy Honker

Would you have any use of the English books of the chapters you were unable to translate? I have the whole atonement arc and 2 @ 3 books of the festival accompanying arc.

    • RM

Would you do the honor of uploading the Atonement Arc chapters? I would really love to read chapters 6-16

      • Happy Honker

        Coming soon
        Give me around 2 weeks

        • Higurashi-fan

Oh wow, are you serious? :OO Thank you sooooooooooooooooooo much!!

        • Higurashi-fan

And will you upload it to Mangafox?

  14. I’m so thankful to you for translating Umineko! But, but, I’m reading it in order, 1,2,3 (…), and waiting for new chapters is killing me! I hope that the new update will come soon. Umineko is like a drug, I will die without it 😀 So, know that you’re doing a good job and let a miracle happen and new chapters will be released faster :3
Thank you very much and know, that I’ll be first to read new chapters of episode 6 :3
Sorry for mistakes in my comment ;3

  15. thank you so much for translating such a awesome series. thanks to you i am able to translate it into my language and so everybody can read that great manga

  16. Happy Honker

I am just wondering is there a reason you are simultaneously translating the last three chapters? It’s killing me to wait for the rest of chapter 6 while 7 and 8 have chapters out 🙂

    • JJ

Umineko isn’t printed out in an ordered progression.
Short after Ep 1 manga version started, they started Ep 2 and then Ep 3 and so on.
Currently in Japan Ep 6 has been concluded by a short time but Ep 7 & 8 are both ongoing.
Due to this, who’s reading the manga following the correct progression (Ep1, then Ep 2, then Ep 3) might be interested into seeing Ep 6 finished, then Ep 7, then Ep 8 but who has already read the visual novel and know Ep 7 & 8 are out, might be more interested in one of the other episodes as they expand the VN and reveal stuffs that weren’t previously in.
Also as different people work on different episodes and Nabiki needs time to get the volumes and scan them an Ep can go faster and another slower according to who’s working on it and to how fast Nabiki can get the original volumes with the chapters in question.
So that’s the best we can do to try and make everyone happy.
If it’s of some small confort we’re trying to work on Ep 6 as fast as we can and hopefully soon you should see 2 new chapters out.

  17. Mimi

    Thank you so, so much for translating Umineko! I love it so much asdfjkl;

  18. bagong016

Can you guys do another series of higurashi? Like Meakashi-hen and the final arc, Matsuribayashi-hen? I don’t understand japanese so it’s no use for me to have the RAW version. If you need help I can do some cleaning of typesetting the page.

    • JJ

The full version of Meakashi-hen is already available on some scanlation webs like mangago.com.
Try typing in your search enjine Meakashi-hen chap 16 and you should come up with more than 1 result.
Yen Press owns the right to Higurashi Kai now and it has almost printed it all (I think they only miss the last volume) so I fear no one will try to scanlate it anymore as it had been already officially released and your only chance to see it complete is to hope someone will scan the missing chapters from the Yen Press version (as I think they did for Meakashi-hen).

  19. Have you ever RAWS of Umineko ?
I search on internet but your page was the most complete and i can’t find episode 3-8 in good quality anywhere now you delete them.
(if you can help me do it with mail, to avoid problems)
    Thank you \o/

  20. May

Where are the Umineko raws? Did you delate them?

  21. Stephanie

Hi!^^ Glad to meet you ~
I love Umineko no naku koro ni !!!
When will you release next chapter of ep 5??? I would be very happy if you can tell me 😀 and happy birthday! It’s never late to wish a happy birthday ^^
I’m very grateful that you translate the manga *O* since it’s not avalaible in my country so I can’t buy it :S
    Thanks for all !!!!

  22. lithium akane

Hi! Very nice this site ^^ I’d like to translate Umineko no naku kori no to spanish and I’d want to know if I can use your translation and scans =) Of course, I won’t remove your credits

  23. soranokira

I just felt like correcting some parts of your about page =P sorry about that.
    “About the group:
The WTDND (When They do Not Deserve) Group ……We also work translating Higanbana no Saku Yoru Ni, another project from Ryukishi07, the father of Higurashi and Higanbana.” (I think it’s supposed to be Higurashi and Umineko, rather than Higanbana, since you mentioned ‘another project of Ryukishi’s’. also, work ‘on’* translating rather than work translating =P.

“What is Higanbana no Saku Yoru Ni?
UHiganbana no Saku Yoru Ni is a Japanese mangá created by Ryukishi07.”
    ^mistyped an additional U before Higanbana~

though, thanks for working Ryukishi’s works! They’re awesome ;D it’s kind of rare to have such dedicated groups working on such a long series without dying out and having other groups take it over. Please continue the good work! Your efforts are very much appreciated.

  24. I’m using your Tsumihoroboshi-hen scanlate as a basis translation to render Atonement into Russian. Thank you.

By the way, hope you will continue translating Matsuribayashi and Tsumihoroboshi chapters, enjoyed reading these.
    “Fight, O~ ☆!”

    • Nabiki asakura

You’re welcome, I’m happy that our work is helping you =3
I actually love to work on matsuribayashi, but it looks like we will delay it a litte more, since we’re having trouble to finish some umineko chapters, and also the year is ending, so it means more time studing and less working, what is really boring because I obviously prefer to spend my time typesetting than studing =<

  25. HiguUmi

Hi! Thanks for the translation of higurashi and umineko!
Please, could you give links to raws Episode 1? and other Episode?

  26. froody1911

Would you guys be interested in taking up Kokoroiyashi-hen? Here’s the raw: http://www.mediafire.com/?bm95o0djqw14qem

It hasn’t been taken up by any group, and it’s only 1 volume (7 chapters). Should be a quick job.

Also hoping you guys are able to release that last volume of Episode 1 soon 🙂

    • froody1911

      Bump. No reply?

      • nabikiasakura

Hi, sorry for not answering sooner XD
Well, actually we already have to much projects to finish, so I guess we cn’t get a new one now
But, I’m almost sure that I saw in animesuki that someone was wrking on kokoroyashi, you should check it….

      • froody1911

        Aww… 😦
I did check, nobody’s doing it. There was some group that took it up a few years ago, but they didn’t do even a single chapter, and the group’s been inactive since 2008.

  27. Lambdadelta

Hi, Nabiki-san, i’m vietnamese translator, remember me? :)) , can you give me ep 3 chapter 7 raw, ep 4 raws, ep 5 6 raws, i can’t find it in web, can you help me?. Please, i will happy if you do that

      Yeah, i remember you XD
As soon as I have a free time today, i’ll check my files and search for it for you, ok? =3

  28. Gwen

Thank you so much for making these available. I hope you can find the scans of Umineko, because that is my favorite out of all of these.
    Thanks for translating! 😀

  29. hello I am Tantei from KAW (Kindaichi Academy Workz, we like to do under done mystery anime and manga). I was told by a translator that you may need some help with higanbana I think we maybe be able help you with you need it. could you possibly tell me via email or however you want if you would like to joint with us. • nabikiasakura

I’m the one who needs to thank you. Without you people supporting our work we wouldn’t be able to do it at all. Thank you for visiting us and supporting.

  33. Just curious

I was wondering if you guys were interested in picking up the parody series “Higurashi no naku KOI ni: All you need is love”.
    http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=55532
I would love to see it done, and it would compliment the work you already have nicely, being higurashi and all.

    • nabikiasakura

Unfortunally, we still have matsuribayashi in the way and too much umineko, so we can’t get another project for now…
But I can recommend you the Enigma group, since they like to translate and work on higurashi parodies

  34. Damn, I must be read to the end =)
Forgive my impertinence, but do not go Do you have an episode of PDS scans? I just can not handle well scans, and people who know how to do it I do not. And you have the scans are well treated and if I intervened it’ll only get worse…

    • nabikiasakura

Hi sweet. No problems about you translating it to russian, however I don’t have the psd for the chapters…
You see, we work on too much series, and I’m the one responsible for checking everything and releasing, so things get stocked in my pc. For some time I used to stock everything and never delete it, but it was getting to heavy and I was losing a precious hd free space, so I most of delete everything after releasing it…

  35. Hello.
I would like to translate uminek Russian language and wanted to know can I use your translation and scans?
Of cource on our site credits your group will be listed.
    Sorry for my bad English))
